I saw this reviewed in New Scientist and thought it sounded like it might be fun. Geeks of a certain age will remember running Mandelbrot set programs on their Atari ST and Amiga home computers back in the late 80s and early 90s. I know I did. The things ran for hours and produced those stunningly beautiful fractal images, of which the Mandelbrot Set is the most familiar. There was a TV documentary made in 1994 (I don’t recall seeing it, but my memory isn’t what it was… , and now, ten years on, here’s the book. Introduced by Arthur C Clarke, and with contributions from Benoit Mandelbrot (of the set fame), Ian Stewart (mathematician and all round hoopy frood[1]) and others. Not only that, but there’s a DVD of the TV programme included.
I’ll post more when I’ve seen the book and the DVD.
