The Mercury Music Prize is an annual event which invloves promoting the sales of about twelve albums by putting them on a widely-publicised shortlist, then giving the award to one of the more obscure[1] nominees.
Every year, I see the shortlist, note how many of them I already have and wait for the ones I like to not win. But this year, something seems to have gone wrong[2]. The award has actually gone to a real band who play real instruments and perform real songs. Yes, it’s Franz Ferdinand, who I have mentioned here before, and whose debut album:
is still one of my favourites of the year. I’m shocked.
[1] Or “crap” as sometimes seems to be the case
[2] Or “right”, perhaps.
