I’m singularly Keane[1] on this

Sunday, 2nd May 2004 11:55 am

I don’t normally comment about singles, but since it’s a whole extra week before the album comes out, I’m going to get excited about the new single from Keane. An earlier version of Everybody’s Changing was out a while ago on an independent label. It was the song that really attracted me to them[2] and I’m happy to see it rerecorded and issued again with a higher profile.

So little time
Try to understand that I’m
Trying to make a move to stay in the game
I try to stay awake and remember my name
But everybody’s changing
And I don’t feel the same

Keane’s sound is based around vocal, piano and drums. No guitars. They’re being hyped a bit as “the next big thing”, which often proves fatal, but I think they have what it takes to rise above that…

More when I’ve heard the album. In the meantime, UK readers[4] are encouraged to visit your nearest record shop and buy the single this week. I know I will. :grin

[1] Sorry. Had to be done. Won’t do it again. Until next time :tongue
[2] Heard it one day on 6 Music and started googling for the lyrics.[3]
[3] I do that a lot
[4] All of you :wink

Who Killed the Zutons?

Sunday, 2nd May 2004 11:43 am

Well, look, it wasn’t me, OK? And I do hope rumours of their death are exagerated, as it would be a shame if they aren’t around to make another album.

What am I talking about? The Zutons, a band about whom I know approximately nothing, but who make a rather pleasing sound. Their debut album, Who Killed the Zutons has been out for a couple of weeks now. I’d seem some positive reviews, and bought it pretty much on impluse in Tesco’s yesterday. And then had one of those OOOHHHHHHHHHH!! moments. As in “so that’s who it is!” I seem to get this a lot. I hear tracks on the radio, like them, but manage not to register who’s responsible for them[1].

This CD includes several familiar songs including Pressure Point and Havana Gang Brawl. It’s good fun stuff, not sure how to categorise it, really. Pleasantly silly. Reminds me of something, but I can’t quite remember what. Worth a listen.

[1] More of this when I get hold of Graham Coxon’s new one….

Progress!
