Typos can be fun

Sunday, 22nd May 2005 7:22 pm

I try not to make a habit of mocking other people’s typos[1], but some are just too good to pass up. I just looked through the week’s TV guide in today’s Independent on Sunday, and there it was. Not just hidden away in the listings, but in the “Choice” sidebar for Monday, in large bold type. It seems Five are showing Raging Planet, one of those shows about extremes of weather and other natural phenomena. Only according to the sidebar, it’s called Raging Plant. :duh:

Anyone else getting a mental image of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors? :eek2:

[1] I think there’s a fundamental rule of the Internet that if you post anything mocking a typo, you’re sure to make a worse one in the process

Yaaawwwwwn

Weight down a wee bit more this morning to 202.0 pounds (14 stone 6 pounds, 91.6kg). Another wet morning, so I had to get the bus in - and this time it was raining heavily enough for me not to feel like I was just being lazy. I got quite wet enough getting from the bus stop to the office, thank you very much.

Been waking up far too early most of this week - 5am, and too awake to go back to sleep. :eek2: . This has given me some nice reading time, but it also means I’m very tired :sleepy:

Plans for the weekend: SLEEP.

Is it just me?

Monday, 16th May 2005 11:00 pm

Just saw a TV ad for a soft drink. It shows various people swigging Fanta Light (or was it Lite?) and immediately spitting it out. All of them smiling and generally looking very happy about it all. After all that, a voice over suggests that everyone liked the idea of Fanta Light, but not everyone liked the taste, and hey wow, we’ve got rid of that and we’ve got a new product that actually tastes good.

So, what they seem to be saying is

You know the stuff we used to try to sell you? It was rubbish! But this new one’s great. No, really. Honestly, we mean it this time!!

Now maybe I’m just an old cynic[1], but I just have this feeling that if they lied before, why should we believe them now?

Not that I actually care, you understand. I hardly ever drink that kind of thing anyway, and if I’m going to, I’ll have the version with real sugar if you don’t mind.

Hmmm. I seem to have made up for not posting at the weekend now

[1]

The Human Clock

Friday, 6th May 2005 7:07 pm

The Human Clock is a lot of fun. It presents a series of photographs, changing each minute of the day. Each picture has the time included in it - sometimes just written on a piece of card, sometimes more creatively. It’s clever. Probably been there for ages, and I’m the last person to notice it.

Here’s another clock page that I know has been around a while. Nifty bit of Flash. Worth a look.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…

Yes, well. Election result pretty much as most people predicted: Labour back for a third term[1], Tony Blair still in power, but with a much reduced majority in the House of Commons. The Conservatives have gained some seats[2], and the Liberal Democrats have made a net gain of eleven seats, taking them to 59. Still not enough for them to be the real “third force” that they’re trying to be. Still another 25 or so results to come, but they’re not going to change the situation dramatically.

The theory is that with a reduced majority, Blair will have to pay more attention to the House of Commons (won’t take a lot of disgruntled back-benchers abstaining or voting against the government to give him a problem). I can’t say I’m convinced.

[1] Which is the first time the Labour party has managed that, so people who think things like that are significant will think that’s significant :rolleyes
[2] But not that many, so there are some signs of sanity around

A bunch of counts

Thursday, 5th May 2005 10:47 pm

I can’t quite bring myself to start watching the election coverage yet, so I’m quite happy that Bremner, Bird and Fortune have a special programme on, with the delightful title A bunch of counts. Sums up the whole sorry spectacle, really…

I’m going to shut up and watch it now.

I might post the odd update as the night progresses…

Another slight adjustment

Thursday, 5th May 2005 10:41 pm

Hmmmm, up a bit today to 203.0 pounds (14 stone 7 pounds, 92.1kg). Not too bad, considering I had a rather nice pizza and quite possibly a bottle of wine last night.

Had another moderately inactive day today. Got up, did that voting thing, wandered into town. Didn’t do a lot, came home.

I haven’t really done very much at all with this week off, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it’s good to just slow down, relax and take things easy. I’ll need to do some shopping and the like tomorrow, though.

Pirate Names

Tuesday, 26th April 2005 7:51 am

All very silly, but sometimes I just have to fill in silly internet quiz thingies. This is, allegedly, my, err, Pirate name.

My pirate name is:
Mad Tom Rackham

Pirate flag

Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!

Have a go, and see who you are….

No surprises

Thursday, 21st April 2005 9:56 pm

And back up to 203.4 pounds (14 stone 7.4 pounds, 92.3kg).

Too tired to even contemplate the vagues possibility of exercise. Managed to wake up at 3am this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep for ages. :???:

But then, I’ve been feeling a bit off all week…

Mutter!!!!

Friday, 15th April 2005 4:36 pm

It’s quite shocking, the things I have to put up with. For a while now, some people have been claiming that I bear a slight resemblance to some TV personality known as Simon Cowell[1].

And now, one of my friends[2] has created a web page drawing attention to this vicious attack! I’m shocked! Outraged! And other things! :rolleyes

[1] Pop Idol in the UK, and its American equivalent, apparently. Wouldn’t know, as I wouldn’t watch that kind of thing without being paid a very large sum of money up front.
[2] Who shall remain nameless for the moment, but you know who you are, Gordon[3]
[3] Ooops :grin
