Here I am, brain the size of a planet...

So, no change there, then

Wednesday, 25th May 2005 9:38 pm

Yes, today’s weight was the same as yesterday’s. But since 202.0 pounds (14 stone 6 pounds, 91.6kg) is the lowest figure this year, I’m quite happy about that

The weather was better today, so I was able to walk to and from work - and it was quite warm on the way home. This evening’s exercise was the standard 10km on the exercise bike, which was moderately hard work and got me rather warm, followed by a total of 190 crunches on the abominable abdominal exerciser. But despite it feeling like hard work, my maximum heart rate was a relatively low 130.

I’ll try to do something similar tomorrow night.

That’s good

This morning’s weight was nicely down to 202.0 pounds (14 stone 6 pounds, 91.6kg). As it was raining a wee bit[1], I didn’t walk home, but I did do 10km on the exercise bike this evening, getting my heart rate up to 134.

Top Cat

No, not the cartoon, but a potentially interesting plugin recently announced on the WordPress support forum. What it does is let you choose a main category for posts which have been placed in more than one category[1]. This then allows you to do things to posts based on that main category.

Pick a categoryUnfortunately, it doesn’t quite work for me at present. It’s a bit odd, really. If it didn’t work at all, I’d just shrug and wait for the next version. But what I get is what you see on the left - just two of the categories have got the radio buttons. I think I’ll follow this up on the forums and see where it goes…

Making a start

Monday, 23rd May 2005 8:55 pm

Weight slightly down again this morning to 203.6 pounds (14 stone 7.6 pounds, 92.4kg), which is a moderately Good Thing.

The good news is that after weeks of lethargy, I managed to get myself on the old exercise bike again tonight :bouncy: . I managed the usual 10km in a little under 20 minutes, with a peak heart rate of 138. After just over a month of being mostly inactive, it was hard work, but not too hard.

Now I’m going to try to do the same for as many nights this week as I can. And if that works, I’ll start phasing in the other exercises again.

Chasm City - Alastair Reynolds

Sunday, 22nd May 2005 8:03 pm

This is Reynolds’ second novel, and it’s set in the same universe as Revelation Space, but it’s not a sequel. It’s a stand-alone story, but it fills in a lot of the background to the earlier book. At first, it seems like it’s going to be a simpler story - we don’t have the intertwining multiple viewpoints going on this time - but as the book progresses, it turns out to be a great deal less simple.

Tanner Mirabel, formerly a soldier, more recently a security specialist on Sky’s Edge[1] is pursuing Argent Reivich, who he holds responsible for the death of his employer’s wife. He takes passage on a ship to Yellowstone, home of the famous Chasm City. But when he awakes from “reefersleep” he has some unexpected problems. For a start, he’s lost a lot of his memory. Then he learns that the once glorious Chasm City has been devastated by the Melding Plague, a nanotechnological virus that turns high-tech machines - including the implants that most people had in their brains - into twisted, distorted and often deadly forms. The city is now divided in two - at the lower levels there’s the Mulch, a dark damp dystopia more than slightly reminiscent of Blade Runner, while high above in the Canopy live the rich, most of whom are effectively immortal.

Having been apparently infected with a tailored virus before leaving Sky’s Edge, Mirabel starts having dreams about Sky Haussman, who was killed three centuries earlier after a terrible crime. But as the dreams turn into flashes of memory, Mirabel begins to wonder if there is something else in his past…

As is generally the case with Reynolds, there’s a good selection of supporting characters, a lot of misdirection and confusion, with everything coming together in an unexpected way. Before the story ends, Mirabel learns the truth about his own background, the origins of Chasm City, the cause of the Melding Plague, and much more. And at the end, having learned more than he could ever have expected, he starts work on changing Chasm City for the better.

He seems to have been inspired by an interesting thought:

How long would you have to live; how much good would you need to do, to compensate for one act of pure evil you’d committed as a younger man?

This being a Reynolds novel, there’s much more going on than I’ve mentioned here. If you’ve read Revelation Space, you’ll get a lot out of this - some things that were only alluded to in the earlier book are explained here. But it works well enough on its own, and I’m happy to recommend it to anyone who likes their sf hard and their plots convoluted.

Must get some motivation

Weight up a bit after yesterday’s rest - 204.4 pounds (14 stone 8.4 pounds, 92.7kg). Not a lot else to report, really. I still can’t quite get myself to start exercising.

Typos can be fun

Sunday, 22nd May 2005 7:22 pm

I try not to make a habit of mocking other people’s typos[1], but some are just too good to pass up. I just looked through the week’s TV guide in today’s Independent on Sunday, and there it was. Not just hidden away in the listings, but in the “Choice” sidebar for Monday, in large bold type. It seems Five are showing Raging Planet, one of those shows about extremes of weather and other natural phenomena. Only according to the sidebar, it’s called Raging Plant. :duh:

Anyone else getting a mental image of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors? :eek2:

Another exciting weight report

Saturday, 21st May 2005 11:30 am

And Saturday’s weight figure is slightly up at 202.6 pounds (14 stone 6.6 pounds, 91.9kg). Had a nicely relaxed day, even if I did wake up a bit too early again. Still, this waking up early thing is giving me some more reading time - which means I’ll have another book review for you just as soon as I finish writing it.

Another upgrade…

Friday, 20th May 2005 8:30 pm

Well, WordPress was updated to v1.5.1 last week. The upgrade fixed some problems in v1.5, but (as is so often the case with software) introduced a few minor problems. There’s now an upgrade to the upgrade, and we’re now running on 1.5.1.1. Both upgrades were quite painless.

If you’re running 1.5, there is apparently a security problem which is fixed by the upgrade. You have, as they say, been warned :eek2:

Yaaawwwwwn

Friday, 20th May 2005 7:42 pm

Weight down a wee bit more this morning to 202.0 pounds (14 stone 6 pounds, 91.6kg). Another wet morning, so I had to get the bus in - and this time it was raining heavily enough for me not to feel like I was just being lazy. I got quite wet enough getting from the bus stop to the office, thank you very much.

Been waking up far too early most of this week - 5am, and too awake to go back to sleep. :eek2: . This has given me some nice reading time, but it also means I’m very tired :sleepy:

Plans for the weekend: SLEEP.
