Yes, it’s another series of Later with Jools Holland. It’s still by far the best music show on TV. Still the same format - five or six acts, who get to perform two or three songs, other guests, and the always wonderful Jools.
Tonight’s show included Green Day, who not only performed American Idiot, the title track of their current album, but also their classic Basket Case[1].
And as if that wasn’t enough, the awesome[2] Elvis Costello was on, playing a few songs from his new album, The Delivery Man.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Paul Simonon and Mick Jones, formerly of The Clash[4] were in the studio for a short interview, accompanied by an archive clip of Clampdown, one of many glorious tracks on London Calling.
Later… always includes a wide range of music - not every act in a particular show will appeal to me, but there’s always something to enjoy. And it was the first place I saw the quite wonderful Franz Ferdinand.
[1] This is one of the things I really like about Later… - it’s not just about bands promoting their current material, they also play older songs.
[2] Not a word I use lightly[3]
[3] Some people seem to mean “quite good” when they say “awesome”
[4] Possibly the best band ever
