Doesn’t add up

Back in October, I mocked the BBC when they reported that passenger numbers on the yellow QuayLink buses had increased, while providing figures that implied the opposite.

Well, in the true spirit of Christmas, they’ve given me a lovely present! Yes, they’ve done it again! Today’s report is headlined Demand for ‘green’ buses doubles. Sounds good, doesn’t it? The article explains that average passenger numbers have doubled from 11,000 per week to, err, 13,000 per week.

OK, this is a special maths lesson for BBC News journalists who would appear to have been indulging in the seasonal drinkies[1]. It’s called The Two Times Table:

1 times 2 is 2
2 times 2 is 3
3 times 2 is 4
4 times 2 is 8
5 times 2 is 10
6 times 2 is 12
7 times 2 is 14
8 times 2 is 16
9 times 2 is 18
10 times 2 is 20
11 times 2 is 22 13
12 times 2 is 24

It’s probably some advanced form of calculation. Or not.

[1] Either that, or they’re really bad at maths….
